The Australian winter begins on the first day of June and lasts until the end of August. And this year, the low temperatures have been impressive in Australia. The country recorded its highest volume of snow in 54 years at the beginning of June this year. In some regions of Australia, such as Victoria and New South Wales, the volume of snow reached 800 meters.
And now that we're entering the last month of winter, the temperatures are getting a bit warmer, making it easier to get out of the house and do some fun activities in various parts of the country. That's why Good Day Education has put together 5 super fun activity ideas for you to do during the Australian winter. Check them out:
1 - Visit museums and art galleries
No matter what city you're in, there will always be an incredible museum or art gallery for you to visit. And in this cold weather, spending a few hours admiring works of art or learning about curious facts in museums can be an interesting way to escape the cold.
And the coolest thing: many of Australia's top galleries and museums - including the Sydney Observatory and the Art Gallery of NSW - have special opening hours during the winter, where you can check out exhibitions after hours, so you can go after work!
What's more, most of these places offer free admission or discounted tickets for students, so there's no better choice of activity to do with friends during the winter. But remember to check the website of the museum or art gallery you want to visit, as you may need to book an appointment.
2 - Take a walk around waterways
Now that the temperatures are getting a bit warmer, walking along Australia's waterways can be a good idea. What's more, taking a brisk walk along the beaches and lakes, even with a good jacket, is a great way to start the day and relax. Best of all, there are usually cafés or food vans along the way, so you can stop for a coffee or a delicious hot chocolate.
3 - Practicing winter sports
Sport never stops in Australia and this is no different in winter. So, despite the cold weather, you can still take part in many sporting activities such as field hockey and rugby, popular winter sports.
But if you're the type who just likes to watch sports, many Australian pubs show live matches, so you can watch with friends. What's more, Australian soccer, known as AFL, is played in winter, so if you haven't had the chance to watch this popular game yet, now might be the time!
4 - Visit a café
Australia has a huge number of beautiful cafés (and instagrammable!) in amazing places, with hot drinks, fresh pastries and other snacks for when you need a boost. And even though cafés are a good idea all year round, in winter they can be even better!
Also, if you want something different, visit the international cafés - that way you can try something new, like a Turkish tea and a slice of Greek baklava, or a Vietnamese coffee! Australia is a multicultural country, so make the most of it!
5 - Make a daytrip
Even if you're not working and don't have much time to travel, you can still go on an adventure near your city. Taking a day trip is a great way to explore new places. Visit the penguins on Philip Island in Victoria, take pictures with the quokkas at Rottnest in Western Australia or see some beautiful waterfalls on the outskirts of Darwin!
