One of the most popular courses for entrepreneurs - or those who dream of becoming one - is the Project Management. With the expansion of the "startup" culture, the demand for trained professionals who can run different businesses has grown.
The qualification covers topics such as time management, people management and project management. Australia has some advantages compared to countries like Brazil, such as study time and cultural diversity. Certification (Cert IV + Diploma) can be achieved in 2 years.
Instructor Marion Camaitoga, from Greenwich Management College, comments that in order to achieve success, planning must be well structured. "We plant the idea and build on it so that it grows more and more". Also according to the teacher, "most of the students on the course have some kind of degree or qualification that can be deployed in conjunction with the new knowledge, which is an advantage in the job market".
The classes deal with real, everyday situations and how to manage projects creatively and effectively. "We talk about how to plan a wedding, build a house and even paint a room," says Marion. "What I love is to stir the students' passion so that they can apply the course to something meaningful in their lives," she adds.
The lessons start with language. With a strong focus on goals, task management and deadlines, the instructor recommends that students call the plans "projects", as they "should have a beginning, middle and end, which helps students define how to approach each part of the schedule", she says.
For Marion, the big secret is to make the process fun. "The best solution is to direct the content to situations that the students are experiencing," she says. "That way, the result will be relevant to their lives," she says. "They learn, for example, how to program the painting of a room," he says. "When you prepare carefully, the project will be successful," he explains. "We try to make it clear to the students how important Project Scope is," he adds.
One of the Colombian students has already become the teacher's love interest and has his first business planned. "He's going to sell and install solar panels in his town," explains the instructor. "Initially, the project was to start in ten years, but today he has set himself a target of three years," she says excitedly.
Much of the students' inspiration comes from the case studies proposed by the course. "I tell them my story in the sector and also show them how established companies like MacDonald's and Coca-Cola work," he says. "At the end of the Diploma classes, for example, they'll have a complete business plan," he adds.
For Marion, the content taught creates flexible professionals, capable of working with a diverse range of skills. "When you're a Project Manager in a company, any subject that the board doesn't master goes to you, which is an excellent opportunity to flourish," she comments. "If they're aware of your qualifications, sooner or later they'll give you a job," he laughs.
The teacher also warns students about how to deal with company policies, because big names in the market already have their methods structured. "In big companies, you have to follow the methods stipulated by the directors, so we must always be sharp in order to get the approval of the CEO and have as much freedom as possible when carrying out the projects," he adds.
