Starting out in a new professional field is not always an easy task. In another language, then, it can lead to a lot of confusion!
There are some words that are essential in the day-to-day life of those who face the toil in the land of the kangaroos. To help you avoid being left with a "koala behind your ear", we've listed a few names that are champions at leaving newcomers at a loss.
Roster is the establishment's/company's work schedule and is usually sent out weekly.
Shift is the working day and working hours. The roster shows when each employee has to report.
Payslip is that word that brings tears of happiness to the eyes, because it's with it that the salary comes. The document is our payslip and details the week's deductions and earnings.
Fortnightly is the word used to describe a period of 2 weeks. Rent, salaries and services such as gym memberships are usually charged/deposited every 14 days.
Wages/Salary is payment. Companies usually pay by the hour, which makes the salary variable according to the amount of work done.
Superannuation is a kind of private pension plan. Employers are obliged to pay into it and, if you return to your home country, part of the proceeds can be transferred to your account.
Tax is tax. Every amount collected by the government is shown on your payslip, purchase receipts and so on.
