When people talk about studying abroad, courses related to business administration and business, such as an MBA, immediately spring to mind. But the range of areas to study is much wider than you might think, as the job market changes every day.

With the world's population becoming increasingly elderly, the demand for professionals able to treat and care for senior citizens is also increasing. Another niche that requires a specialized workforce is assisting people with special needs, whether they have a physical or mental disability. One indication of this need is that in Australia itself, one in three citizens has a mental disorder during their lifetime.

In the land of the kangaroos, for those who work or are thinking of working in the mental healthThere are special courses with state-of-the-art technological resources and highly qualified teachers, preparing future professionals to stand out in the job market.

Courses in Mental Health

Certificate III in individual support (ageing): In this course, students will learn to carry out activities to maintain the personal care of the elderly, help the patient with daily activities, support individual health and emotional well-being and assist clients with dementia and in need of palliative care. When they enter the job market, professionals will be able to work as personal care assistants, caregivers for the elderly, accommodation support professionals and nursing assistants.

Certificate III in Individual Support (disability): This course is similar to the previous one, but focuses on caring for people with physical and/or mental disabilities.

Certificate IV in Ageing Support: In this qualification, the student will learn to carry out daily activities to maintain an individual's well-being through personalized care, provide services to people with complex needs and promote the patient's independence in the community. After completing this stage, the professional will be able to lead a team of caregivers and supervise special care.

Certificate IV in Disability: This course will help professionals develop the skills to provide support to people with disabilities in specialized care spaces or in their own homes. This support is essential to make the patient more self-sufficient and better able to carry out daily tasks. Career opportunities range from working as a residential care worker to coordinating a team.

Diploma of Community Services: This qualification covers various fields within community service, such as the treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism, domestic violence, mental and physical disabilities and others, making the professional able to design effective treatment for patients at risk or with special needs.

Diploma of Counselling: The student on this course will be prepared to work with patients with mental illness, counseling on alcohol and drug use, assisting in domestic violence centers, developing work with young people, working as a caregiver, assisting child victims of abuse and trauma.

Diploma of Mental Health: This qualification is aimed at people who want to care for and work with patients with mental health needs. The professional will be able to implement activities that promote the integration of patients into the community, prevent the relapse of patients with chemical dependency and promote the recovery of patients through community and clinical programs, based both in residence and in centers.

"Do I have to do everything?"

Anyone wishing to enter this field of study should be aware that one course is linked to the other, i.e. the student cannot go straight into the "Diploma", since the "Certificates III and IV" provide the theoretical and practical basis for the professional's work.

However, it is possible to put together "packages" that combine Certificates III, IV and Diploma, focusing on both Aged Care and Disability, thus optimizing study time so that professionals can enter the market more quickly and without jeopardizing their performance.

Another thing to bear in mind is that this career requires patience and empathy, since its essence is to help and care for people with disabilities and/or special needs.

With theory, case studies, simulations, project development and lots of practice, students in this area will be able to compete for a position of excellence in this market, which is growing every year and is short of skilled labor.
